![]() ![]() At Bastion, after an initial chat with Schultz or Woolcock about their requirements, they will spend the next 2-3 hours at Riderfit, one of Bastion’s companion companies at the front of the building. They won’t enter a flashy retail store and view scores of factory-fresh bikes, choosing a few to test-ride and deciding which one they want to take out the door with them. When a cyclist commissions a bicycle from Bastion, they should not expect the experience they might have purchasing a bike from one of the well-known larger manufacturers. ![]() This co-operative approach is an intriguing part of their business model, and just one of the ways Bastion likes to do things differently. Schultz says they think of it as an advanced manufacturing bicycle hub because, though there are synergies between the businesses and they send each other work, they share the space because none of them could afford to be there independently otherwise. Bastion empowers the rider to design their own adjustable bike that is a unique fit not only to their desired specifications and aesthetic preferences, but the physical capabilities of their own body with all its ticks and quirks.īastion shares the industrial warehouse it occupies in Fairfield, north-east Melbourne, with three other specialised bicycle-related companies. All keen cyclists, it was a classic case of creating the bike they wanted to buy but which didn’t exist. Bastion Managing Director Ben Schultz recalls how he and his co-founders, James Woolcock and Dean McGeary, wanted to incorporate their three passions: cycling, leading-edge manufacturing and Australian-made production. The character lines along the length of the arm are reminiscent of those found in the lugs of their frames helping tie the crank back into the distinct Bastion aesthetic. After the R&D specialists were handed their notice from Toyota in 2014, they sat down and nutted out a new business concept. The asymmetric design of the crank gives the feeling of movement even when stationary. The hybrid titanium and carbon fibre spindle is a novelty in the industry, and aligns with the design philosophy of Bastion of using titanium for complex shaped and loaded parts, especially where contact is involved, and carbon fibre for simple shapes where the loads are well defined and the angles of the fibres can be aligned efficiently to carry those loads. The internal structure and wall thickness maps have been optimised over 17 design iterations and the result is a stiffness to weight ratio that is some 2.4 times a solid forged aluminium crankset and is approaching the level of the cranksets they produced for the Olympics. The people from Bastion Cycles spent months benchmarking the best in the market, building the design targets, and then determining the technology, materials and manufacturing techniques they would use to meet those targets.Īlready experienced in making cranksets for track cycling and after developing significant intellectual property, it is clear that they know how to reinforce and structure the interior of the hollow crank arms to resist the combination of torsional and bending loads for the lowest possible weight. They know that they aren’t the first ones to produce cranks, or even the first to produce 3D printed titanium cranks, so they were determined to be better, at least in the metrics they find to be the most important, like stiffness to weight ratio. All mating and bearing surfaces are precision CNC machined. The 30 mm spindle is comprised of 3D Printed titanium drive splines with a moulded carbon fibre torque tube connecting them. The design features hollow 3D Printed titanium cranks arms reinforced with Bastion’s signature internal structural lattice. ![]() Team progressed their ideas from concept paper and business proposal through to sketches and CAD (Computed-Aided Design) development. Working entirely remotely with regular design reviews done via video conferences, the Willing to make the most of every situation, they committed to planning the crankset project. During the pandemic, Melbourne went into one of the longest and strictest lockdowns in the world, and the entire staff of Bastion Cycles had to work from home for over five months. ![]()

What "The Old Gods and the New" is probably most-known for, however, is Tyrion smacking the ever-loving smirk off of Joffrey's face (once again) following a riot in the streets of King's Landing and Arya scrambling to cover her snooping in Harrenhal by asking Jaqen H'ghar to smite Ser Amory Lorch. Moreover, an extensive electrophysiological literature has clearly indicated that it is repetitive stimulation, not a brief stimulus, that reveals the truly striking differences between migraineurs and individuals with no migraine history. However, it has long been clear that the problem for migraineurs comes principally from higher contrast stimuli, not from stimuli that are barely detectable. Most psychophysical work on flicker or temporal frequency has focused on detection thresholds – the minimum contrast that can be detected against a homogeneous field - and there are mixed results as to whether migraineurs differ from controls ( 9– 11). ![]() In a laboratory test of flicker aversion thresholds, we have repeatedly found that migraineurs choose to abort a flickering screen at lower contrasts than healthy controls who, in many cases, are not bothered at all by such a stimulus even at maximum contrast. While many find the flickering sunlight to be mildly irritating, migraineurs find this much more aversive ( 6). A good illustration of this is driving through an avenue of trees at sunset when the sun falls directly behind the tree line. Flicker is particularly bothersome to individuals with migraine. ![]() In particular, spatial and temporal frequencies close to the peak of the human contrast sensitivity function (3–5 c/deg stripes and 10–20 Hz flicker) are most aversive ( 2– 5). However, interictal visual discomfort has been reported to be linked not only to light intensity, but also to specific spatial and temporal properties of the visual input. While most extreme during migraine episodes, photophobia may also afflict migraineurs between episodes. Photophobia (light avoidance) is characterized by hypersensitivity or intolerance to light, such that moderate intensities are perceived as uncomfortable and even painful ( 1). The defining visual features of migraine are photophobia and, in a subpopulation of migraineurs, visual aura which typically precedes headache onset. ![]() ![]() During the week, we’d recommend timing your infiltration of the Palace towards Monday-Wednesday. There’s a “truthiness”, said Barr, but the writer edits, shapes, reveals. Told by one person, a memoir can’t be completely accurate, or even truthful. “A story from a life,” said writer Jenn Ashworth. In Whose Truth Is It Anyway?, writer and presenter Damian Barr set out to examine memoir. Radio 4 had two programmes last week that touched on this, obliquely and directly. Plus, you can’t predict how people react to trauma, can you? Or how you turn it into art. ‘Revelations can be a shock, even to the writer’: Damian Barr. I had a few questions regarding tone – surely they wouldn’t be so blase about the body, even if they were drunk – but it was lovely to hear genuine south London accents, as well as listen to a drama that tackles the problems between men and women in an original way. In fact there’s a dead body to be dealt with… In a two-hander written by relative newbie Liv Fowler, Shvorne Marks and Ami Metcalf, who play Em and Chloe, are fun and believable, their interaction snappy even the in-between-scenes music is good. They niggle and tease, irritate and reminisce. In Sutton Wetherspoon’s, twentysomethings Em and Chloe are bantering like the old mates they are. In contrast, Happy Hour is a small affair: one writer, two actors, one producer, one sound person. The team behind People Who Knew Me is enormous: nine executive producers in all, seven people on dialogue. I’ve heard the first two episodes of People Who Knew Me and I’m in for the long haul. She exec-produced and starred in the interesting historical drama Edith!, is a stalwart of book narration (including the Wheel of Time series) and recently hosted the true crime-ish podcast Mother, Neighbor, Russian Spy. She has done more audio work over the past few years. And Pike is great: bristling, sharp, seductive, with, to my ears, a perfect American accent. No flat, in-studio sound, no stock atmosphere, not a single unbelievable piece of dialogue. It helps that Connie is a bit spiky that we don’t really know why she disappeared that Hugh Laurie appears in episode two and, especially, that the show has been meticulously produced. If she doesn’t, and she dies, Claire will be left with nobody.ĭoes this seem like a low-stakes plot? Written down, perhaps it does, but the script is taut and tense, the story well paced, and Pike sells Connie so brilliantly that I found myself absolutely absorbed. But now Connie/Emily has cancer, she’s going to have to come at least partly clean and find people who are related to her, or who knew her in the past. There, she reinvented herself, created a tight family life for her and Claire and nobody else. Spoiler (but not much of one – you work this out within minutes): Connie is in fact Emily Morris, who used 9/11 to fake her own death and ran away from New York to California. Connie is the single mother of 13-year-old Claire, and, well, Connie’s been living a lie. People Who Knew Me on BBC Radio 5 Live, written and directed by Daniella Isaacs (from Kim Hooper’s book), tells the tale of Connie Prynne – played by Rosamund Pike – and the crisis caused by her breast cancer diagnosis.
